A camera that captures a rapid succession of pictures onto film. By playing the film in an appropriate projector, the images can be viewed in rapid succession to produce an animated picture of what was originally viewed by the camera.
Not to be confused with the camcorder tag, which is a portable device that is composed of a video camera and video recorder. These devices use electronic motion picture acquisition, instead taking a rapid sequence of photos to film, and tend to look very different.
