How to Count the Characters in an Image
Danbooru has counter tags that are divided into 3 genders: boy, girl and other. These are used to count how many "characters" appears in a single image, but in some cases a "character" isn't counted while in other cases a single character can be counted multiple times. Basically it means how many "bodies" of importance are in the image, so in some posts with no humans such as posts featuring unnamed cats no counter tag is used even if you can count the number of cats in the image.
Additionally, Danbooru has solo and solo focus tags that have some non-obvious rules for use. Basically you can't use solo on a post just because there is only one 1girl counter, because named animals count AGAINST solo, but there are no counters FOR named animal characters, so sometimes a post is just 1girl without solo.
If there are some characters whose gender you can't identify, tag with character counter request.
Counting The Viewer
- The viewer is not counted if they don't have a body part inside the image even if a character is talking with them.
- If there is only one character, it can be tagged with solo.
- If a body part is visible, tag with pov and the viewer counts.
Counting Animals, Creatures, Monsters, etc.
Animals are counted differently if they are named (they have a character tag) vs. unnamed (no character tag).
- Unnamed animals and creatures like slime (creature)s are not counted.
- If a post only has unnamed animals, tag with no humans.
- Named animals are not counted, but if they are present you should not use solo.
Counting Genders
- If you can't tell the gender of a named character from the post, use the gender from their wiki.
- If the character doesn't have any distinguishing features such as a disembodied hand, tag with 1other.
- You can ask for help by tagging gender request.
Counting People
- A group of unnamed people in the background or a crowd is not counted.
- Each clone counts as a separate person.
- A post with no human or human-like characters is tagged no humans.
- Disembodied hands and other body parts are counted.
- If only the hand is visible and the character is mostly out of frame they are still counted.
- Characters in a photo held by another character aren't counted even if they are named.
Counting Multiple views
- Do not use solo with multiple views, dakimakura, dual persona or time paradox.
- If the same persona appears multiple times in a post, it's only counted one time, so 3 views of 1 girl is 1girl.
- The same applies for comics.
- If different personas appear in a post, each persona is counted separately, so dual persona of a girl is 2girls.
When to use solo and solo focus
Tag with solo when it's:
- Only one instance of one character in the image.
- A single character with a zoom layer.
- A single character talking to the viewer, and the viewer's body isn't visible in the image.
- A single character with one or more inanimate dolls or photos of other characters.
- A single character with unnamed pet or object characters.
Do not tag solo when it's:
- A single character is being depicted from multiple views (post #12904).
- A dakimakura which contain multiple views.
- Dual persona.
- Time paradox.
- A character alongside an animal or creature with a character tag (talking or otherwise), such as post #9791130.
Use solo focus instead if it's:
- More than one character but only one is the focus of the image.
- A single character talking to the viewer, and the viewer's body is visible in the image (so it's tagged pov).
- One character among a crowd of nondescript, less detailed people.
- Single characters engaged in sex acts with faceless or out of frame characters.
Female, male and other focus
If a post has a boy as the main focus of an image, tag with male focus. If the focus is other-gendered, use other focus.
Danbooru does not use a female focus tag since the majority of posts focus on female characters.
