With how every kid now a days either has a portable gaming device and/or a cell phone, do kids even play with string anymore?

Haven't seen anybody do it for like years. Not as far as my memory goes, anyway.

I dont think so..wasnt that alittle different i know there was a spider web one, maybe its that one im not sure though its been awhile for me too.

It's called String Figure, and Cat's Cradle is just the name of a technique in it. It also is sometimes referred to as String Theory (yeah, name's the same), but that's less common.

Cat's Cradle is just the term most people know about the game, and as such associate the entire game the name. Likely because there was a children's book that taught you how to play, and the book was called Cat's Cradle.
