Porygon
An acrylic painting on a 24''x30'' canvas featuring my favorite Pokémon: Porygon. Unlike my previous LEGO-related pop art paintings, this one uses a more realistic painting method with less stylization, as I focus more on realistic lightning, shadows, and edges.
This started with an acrylic paint pour as a base with the artwork painted over top of it. The acrylic paint pour used blue, red, magenta, and white paint mixed with Floetrol Flood, and then swirled around to create the abstract liquid effect. Then I shot a close-up photo of my Jakks Pacific Porygon figurine and adjusted the colors in Photoshop, and when the paint pour was dry, I used a projector to project my photo of the Porygon image on the canvas. I started with a layer of white primer and then used a pencil to create reference lines of the main image of Porygon.
Eventually I started with several layers of shades of red and blue to create the foundation layers, and added several layers of shadows and highlights with various mixes of red, blue, and pink paint. Finally I created the lightning bolts by using thin brush strokes of white paint to flow with the white streaks of the acrylic paint pour.
Porygon was always my favorite Pokémon, and was also the very first Pokémon I've ever created fan-art of in circa 1998 when I was a teenager. Back when the original Red and Blue games were first introduced to the American audience, I saw early promos of the games in Nintendo Power and was given glimpses of the new characters. I was fascinated by the design of Porygon and made an attempt at drawing one with colored pencils to submit to the magazine's art section.
