Playstation era was awesome, RPGs EVERYWHERE!!! Even if alot of them were trying to copy the success of FF7. Now we're in the "Lets turn everything into an FPS" era as far as the English games go and the Japanese are stuck on "Let's moe-fy everything!".

Eh, give it another fifteen years and Japan'll have moved on to something else incomprehensible to Americans, and America will, hopefully, at least have less brown shooters.
Never reach the peaks of Playstation era, though, mostly because that's when I and I assume you were young and inherently biased towards as we age.
As for why never much LoD fanart... it never really jumped ahead of the pack. Nowadays it'd really stand out as a good game, but then, it was just another game.
I can say with confidence that I am very baised towards the playstation Era because I am a big RPG Player. Which is why the PS1 era is my favorite. The SNES and Genesis era was the era of platformers(honorable mention to beat'em ups). It's hard for me to say how the PS2 Era was as IMO by that generation(PS2,GC,Dreamcast,Xbox) Each system seemed to be doing it's own thing rather than the whole "copy cat" stuff. If you wanted family friendly part games, you wanted the GC(or N64). FPS or perhaps sports(Xbox). The PS2 seemed to have a little bit of everything and I have no clue what I consider the Dreamcast to be.

Less brown shooters thing may happen sooner than you think. This year's Call of Duty actually has color! I think the new generation has really rebelled against the old brown and grey of the last gen.
