I wouldn't consider 7 months to be recent. Deprecating a tag prevents it from being added to new posts, but it doesn't remove it from posts that already have it. If a tag is deprecated without being nuked, then it means tagging the concept is still useful but that a simple automated switch to a new tag wouldn't be appropriate and needs to be done manually.
