In this comic Marisa must be a Female, and Reimu must be male... why? Because no guy in their right mind would care to straddle a 1 inch wooden stick for a bumpy ride... unless they wanted to be infertle afterwards...

Serriously, whoever wrote that male Witches (err.. Wizards/Warlocks) when riding a broom would choose to ride straddling it must have been a woman...

Actually, the side-saddle style of riding is almost explicitly female, and is especially used to highlight femininity in anime. (In real life, side saddles are also used for children too small to actually straddle a horse, but let's put that aside.)

Riding side-saddle is necessitated by having a long dress, which wouldn't let you set astride a horse (or broom) without rolling it all the way up to your hips, and showing off your underwear. It's actually one of those odd things that never gets addressed as to why Marisa never has this problem (and just seems to have an extremely elastic skirt), but her method of riding also speaks to her being something more of a tomboy, along with her masculine speech patterns.

I'm pretty convinced the opposite is true - "Marisa" stands in for a male and "Reimu" is female.

I assumed Marisa just had a lot of slack in her skirt, so she could straddle a broom and it would still drape down to her ankles.

That's what I mean by "extremely elastic skirt", though.

Look at how much slack is required for her skirt to sit the way it does when she is on her broom - you'd basically need double the amount of material you would need on a regular skirt, which means that her skirt would need to fold over on itself multiple times (like a pleated skirt with extremely deep pleats) in order to accommodate that slack.

This doesn't happen, though, her skirt is always shown as just being bell-shaped without any pleats or folds, and no real graphic detail is given to explain this, other than the apparent assumed extreme elasticity of her skirt.

Of course, with that said, I assume the percentage of the fanbase that will actually write several paragraphs detailing skirt physics is probably a rather slim minority... even now, I'm wondering, why, exactly, I'm doing so.

On the subject of Side-Saddle/Straddling.
I realized that Side-Saddle was usually reserved for females when I wrote that (I regularly deal with the Horse community), I was just joking at that un-realistic feature in most stories, regardless of origin (Anime, Manga, Western Stories, etc).

And before anyone askes, I know what riding something like that would feel like... not by choice, mind you... and something I never wish to repeat again.
The seat broke off a bicycle (wasn't mine, and I failed to check the thing for stability) going down a steep (gravel-road) hill.
And that's only barely bumpy... but it still hurt.

Also, it's true for riding a rocket, so I assumed it'd be true for a broom. But I forgot, Common Sense doesn't apply in Gensokyo, or its residents for that matter. (That was not sarcassim, I had honestly forgot)
