Artist's commentary
Image description
A digital painting of a tarot card, the Eight of Machetes. Seven hands with assorted rings and bracelets come out of the borders of the card, holding machetes. An eighth machete is buried in a coconut sprout on a sandy shore, with heliotrope trees growing in the background. A strawberry hermit crab sits in front of the machete blade. A wave comes up from the bottom of the card, and corals and several colorful reef fishes are in the bottom left corner. A greater frigatebird and a pair of white terns fly in the sky, and a red-footed booby parent and chick are nesting in the upper right corner. Big black text at the top reads "IIIV," and "THE EIGHT OF MACHETES" at the bottom.
A tribute to my crewmates on COCO IIIV, the eighth invasive species strike team to take up machetes for reef and rainforest restoration at PANWR. May your blade stay sharp and your sunglasses never be lost.
