In the Twinbee series, power-ups are bells that you find by shooting at floating clouds. Yellow bells are worth points but if you shoot them enough times, they will change colors and turn into different power-ups depending on the color.

Parodius series does the same. Then again Parodius parodizes whole shm'up from Konami (including Gradius)
