It's canon that she lusts for money (so does Marisa) and that she doesn't get donations, but she hasn't been shown starving so I don't think ZUN placed her below the poverty line.

CoLA says she doesn't care for the value of money for herself, and PMiSS says she needs the money to expand the shrine so that it can reach more followers (since for some reason it was built right next to the youkai-filled forest and far away from the village).

Well, there is the chapter of Wild hermit where: She finds gold and seems excited with the idea of expanding the shrine.
But, in the same chapter: Komachi says that her level of desire for money and worshipers is normal for a human and as such she is a simple-minded person.
So, Reimu doesn't have that much of lust for money as fanon often depicts her.

But it wouldn't matter, for the fact that Reimu's route isn't canon in that game and her knowing about the ''treasure'' ship beforehand shows that she is not greedy, for otherwise she wouldn't have missed such opportunity.
