i’ve been thinking a lot about constellations recently. one of the central themes in wesley’s character is his idea that we as people assign meaning to things that don’t actually have anything to them. ironic, for a divination wizard. destiny, constellations, fortunes...their stories are invented. we make up what we want to hear, we search for the familiar in the face of nothingness. but instead of that being a terrifying and lonesome thing, it’s beautiful. wesley believes the notion that we can create entire stories and destinies for ourselves, that we can comfort and love ourselves through the fear of nothingness is extraordinary.

i believe my characters are each little vessels for me to cope through. in this particular aspect of wesley, i think it’s a way to cope with the fear of nothing. the fear that nothing i’m doing is contributing to some great destiny, or some ultimate form i’m supposed to become. so, it’s comforting to believe that the process of making art and telling stories, as small as it may seem, is enough.
