I believe they actually are pears, just not the type we are more accustomed to. They look like Asian pears to me, and that'd certainly explain the nets. I'm going to go ahead and switch the tags over.
Dont rush into it so much. In many Asian countries apples are import-only fruit, so they take care of them with those nets (and the price reflects it... at least here in Thailand).
