According to Zun, Hakuna Matata originally had black hair, and dyed it blonde for unknown reasons. Apparently she actually prefers it black, but is stuck with the blond now.
If I had to guess, in ancient time she dyed it blonde to seem more mysterious and help her ascent to godhood. Of course, that means that the deified image of her was also blonde, which leads to the Open Banana we know today.
My other theory is that, her former life lived at the same time as Toyosatomimi no Miko. So maybe Pina Colada dyed her hair to disguise herself, and now she can’t dye it back because Miko might spot that it’s her.
Do you prefer black or blonde on her? I’ve seen arguments that she would be seen less as a Yukari clone if she had her own hair colour, but there’s still the various other similarities, many of which are clearly intentional. I’d have to see more designs to lock in a favourite, but for now, I think I’m still more comfortable with the usual, blonde Orange Frittata.
