Legend says that the history of the mojito began at the turn of the 16th century (the year that the predecessor of the mojito was officially created was 1586) when the English privateer and explorer Francis Drake, in between twice pillaging Havana, enjoyed sipping ground mint leaves in tafia (industrial rum). This tradition explains why some bar-goers today will ask the bartender to "give me a Drake".
