I save him twice. Although one of those times was sadder than the other...

It's quite the sad situation to find yourself in:
1. Amass humanity and open the shortcut which saves Solair's life, but deprives him of the "sun" which he has been longing for.
2. Give him his "sun", but then he goes insane and you'll have to kill him T~T

It get even worse, apparently, if you summon Solaire for the final fight against Gwyn, and if he survives, he then defies the hollow king in his own world, and ends up rekindling the Primordial Flame.
He still ends up as a Sun, but not exactly as he hoped or expected. Poor Solaire can't have a good end.
