I believe that this is an M16A1 due to the handguard itself being the triangular one (never saw an A2 with a triangular handguard).

Actually that's either an original M16 or an XM16E1 as evidenced by the three-prong flash hider. Can't tell which without seeing the other side.

Apart from the flash suppressor, you're correct. I've handled a M16A1 enough times to know when I see one. XD

If I remember correctly very early production A1s still had the three pronged flash hider. It is hard to tell if it's an A1 because we can't see the side that got the most changes IE the forward assist and later the brass deflector.
