    Yeah, it seems this is pretty canon Flan after all...

    She isn't "locked" in the basement, so much as she stays there intentionally because she knows she's a danger to everyone she meets. The "Pain of 495 years" of canon isn't outrage at being locked up so much as self-hatred for the fact that she can't be near anyone without inevitably destroying everyone she wants to love.

    When you get right down to it, things like Symposium prove canon Touhou to be a pretty depressing place more than anything dark or scary.
