I'm pretty sure the tragic story was "a girl drowned in the spring". Just like "Spring of Drowned Cat", "Spring of Drowned Boar", "Spring of Drowned Duck" (how did a waterfowl even drown in the first place?! I guess that's what makes it tragic, though...) plus a few real screwball ones, like the "Spring of Drowned Yeti-riding-Bull-carrying-Crane-and-Eel".

I guess it's best to just say "It's magic, I don't gotta explain shit!"
