They confused his box for cargo, and loaded it in with the luggage.

Sakurai said that he originally had an idea for SSBB's Adventure Mode to have a plot like the Smashers waiting for a bus to get to the stadium for a tournament or something like that. Not sure if he was serious when he said that, though...
