    They had colored cameras back in the 1930s?

    The series is set in modern times, just with certain parts of history having happened differently.

    I was under the impression it was some years in the future.

    The city-ship dwarfing the Nimitz-class by a factor of about five hundred at least (based on eyeballing the streets in the suburbs, then comparing them to the Nimitz's ~330m keel), I'd say it's pretty far along in the future...

    Aside from the city-carrier, all the technology displayed has been present-day level. I should specify that my statement that this series is set in roughly present-time is secondhand information: other people who had read official sources of information said it where I could read it, and I took their word for it.

    The show has a realistic view of the future (technology showing little to no improvement over the present).

    Well, there is a limit to how much tech can improve. Aside from some fairly big leaps and bounds facilitated by a select few breakthroughs, we've already hit the limit.

    @ThunderBird
    One of the only movies to get the "future not much different from the present" was Terminator 2 (it was made in 1991 but it was set in 1995).

    Probably the civilization broke down in endless warfare (girls in tanks) and 1995 is the date of the restarted calendar.
