I strongly disagree. I liked them both, but the original Gunbuster is incredibly awesome and waaay more sophisticated and hard sci-fi than what the rudimentary designs (which were deliberately made to look retro) could make "people-who-never-watched-the-anime" think...
Diebuster has very crazy FLCL style animation and its plot is also awesome, interesting and twist filled... but it is strongly related to the original. So basically both shows have their fair share of strengths and coolness.
