I always find it weird that people seem to believe that just because Ran has 9 tails for living 800 years at least that Chen is also supposed to gain tails with age. I don't believe that's how it works in all cases right? Or am I somehow terribly wrong?

Only fox yokai gain tails with age.

Wrong. Bakeneko can gain tails too, they just aren't supposed to have that kind of lifespan long enough to allow them to get past 4 and most of them get themselves killed of early.
I think there were a few other similar cases with other transmorgified animals.

I remember there was a very old Nekomata (at Nabeshi or some such) with seven tails.

...Well, Bakeneko and Nekomata aren't exactly the same Youkai either, but I had meant Nekomata... so I still stand corrected.
