I think you are thinking about buddhist monks... both of ye. But since we are talking about that. The 11 part is correct. They collect money to support the temple. The money that is left from that is then given to the poor/to buy food/prepare food for the poor.

At least that is generally how it is supposed to go.

Before Buddha pass away he said to monks that they may change the rule if they see fit
so in Japanese monk case, they can marry,have child and own properties

I am pretty sure they aren't allowed to gather all the donations to the temple for themselves though...
