I thought it was some ORAORAORA until I realized it's high speed beans, which is far more impressive looking at the damage it did.

If I recall correctly, in Gensokyo it functions in a similar manner to 'holy water' and affects oni, demons, undead, etc. For example, I seem to recall someone throwing beans at Remilia and her being affected by it, at one point.
So no, Tanuki aren't affected. Byakuren's just that strong.

Anything thrown by Byakuren is bound to get a few bruises at least and broken bones at most. And speaking of Remilia, sometimes its shown she's affected, sometimes not (Western Vampire vs Eastern Myths... reminds me of one Chinese movie I saw, where a Western Vampire was trying to fight the main characters, and as the latter held up a cross and the vamp fled, he covered himself with his cape soon after and channeled a Jiang Shie, and started hopping).

Even jokingly, don't mess with Byakuren's cute charges. Things won't end well.
