  • ヤマメさん、ぼくより酒に弱いです(笑)
    ヤマメさんがアルコールを摂取したのをこの時初めて見ましたが、みるみる眠そうな顔になっていきました。
    店の人が注文間違えたみたいですねー。

Yamame-san's worse with booze than I am. :-)

This was the first time I'd seen her take in alcohol. She was looking sleepy in no time at all.

Looks like the server messed up her order.

Well, she IS hot for Sanaewife, after all. Not that there's anything wrong with that....

Reader-added tags include "Good thing it didn't end up looking like you'd be sexually harassed, Sanae-san", "Yo, wall, switch out with me!" and "Toasted instantly!" (Originally punning ハイになった (got high) with 灰になった (burned to ashes).)

The survey's anxious to help, of course:

    What do I hand Yamame-san?
    • Water
    • A coat
    • A pillow
    • A blanket
    • A refill

It should be for any Asian. As for Westerners, we might have a rather good chance of drinking her under the table, or at least holding our own.

At least Yamame-san is a sleepy drunk. Much better than rowdy drunks.

Let's give her a blanket. It'll be a while before she comes to.

Dunno about that. While I guess that being Asian does get me very flushed after some shots, I remain quite myself even if I keep chugging it down...though I do get tipsy. Barring one incident during my early experiences with drinking, I can down hard liquor without getting hungover.

    You're an exception, then.

The a significant portion of Asian populations possess a hyperactive variant of Alcohol Dehydrogenase and a lower activity variant of Acetaldehyde Dehydrogenase, as a result of a mutation in the ALDH2 allele. The net result is that Asians metabolize alcohol very fast into acetaldehyde (which causes the flush, also known as Asian Flush (Syndrome)), but the resulting acetaldehyde takes much longer to break down, which is why Asians don't get drunk, more like get sick on alcohol.
It seems that around 30-50% of all Chinese-Japanese have the defective allele, which is still high compared to European populations, where the defective allele is practically non-existent.

For a Westerner, it takes a lot longer to get drunk, but since we break down the acetaldehyde faster, we don't suffer as many ill effects, and not to such a degree, so we can go toe-to-toe with an oni in a drinking contest. And maybe even win. Especially if it's on sake, which is quite light compared to Western liquor.

The things you learn in Danbooru! Brings a tear to my eye.

Sorry to be 'that' guy...Technically speaking, if the percentage of Asians with the defective allele is 30-50%, that would mean fthagn isn't the exception, since he/she is a part of the other 50-70%. I've never really known the chemical process behind alcohol breakdown though, so I've learned something new today. Thank you for teaching me, Thunderbird-sensei!
Also, I imagine ZUN could drink Yuugi under the table...

Oh, the whole biochemistry is a lot more complicated. Trying to understand the whole shebang is what brings a tear to my eye...
And yes, technically, you're right. I'm not one to trust statistics, though, especially with all the intermingling that can occur to mess up population genetics, but that's all we have...
