Depends on the type of speaker used. Some beep, some click. Most can also be muted (you would look at the readout instead).

Click is when a radioactive particle passes through the sensor. Beeping/Tone is a series of these clicks, meaning there is a constant stream of particles flowing through the sensor and usually means you will be dead in seconds or two weeks time as your internal organs start to fail from radioactive poisoning.
