Buddhism VS Taoism with tengus as subject?

This actually is sorta interesting regarding tengu. Byakuren mentions that they were thought to be created from monks that strayed from their paths, but is that the case in Gensokyo? Or are tengu there more akin to another sapient species that has grown up on Earth?

Actuallly, their dialog is taken from SoPM, word to word. Maybe reading that can answer your question.

They weren't monks who strayed from their paths, but that's still somewhat true. They were just some kind of beings that attacked humans, but due to the nature of Youkai, people imagined them the same like the human hermits who trained in the mountain, and that image rubbed on them.
The forms of youkai in the old days were influenced by human imagination, but as of the creation of Gensokyo, youkai nowadays can change on their own. So maybe there aren't actual monks within them now, but it doesn't mean they can't.
