In their defence, RoC is more popularly known as Taiwan. Even their embassy is referred as "Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office". It's not an "embassy" because China is represented by the PRC and ROC is not recognized.

It's just that they have to use the name Republic of China as a probably unwritten aggreement between both sides of the straits; different government, but One China.

Nah, I think its more like they are being stubborn and insist that they are the real China. You can go and ask a Taiwanese which Chinese is better, the one used by PRC or the one used by them, and they will say their Chinese is the "real" one. The older generations at least.

And can you blame them? It's not like the Taiwanese can just pull an Elsa and let it go, there's way too much bad blood between them (see also North Korea vs. South Korea).

Seika pretty much hit the nail on the head; see also the 1992 Consensus, sometimes known as "one China, two interpretations". This is also the reason behind the ROC's not having retracted formal territorial claims over its former territory, not any kind of silly idea of retaking the mainland (much less parts of neighboring states).

Literally, Taiwan doesn't exist as a country. Taiwan, which is formerly called as Formosa, is located 112 nautical miles southeastern off the mainland which separated by the Strait of Taiwan.

In history, the ROC was established on January 1, 1912 and had control over the mainland, then the Communist Party of China began during the May Fourth Movement of 1919 which eventually gained the support of the KMT leftist. Then a civil war between the two parties began on August 1, 1927. It was temporarily stopped on December 22, 1936 as the Japanese already began their offensive operations in China. The civil war was resumed on March 31, 1946, the CPC gained more support from the people because of World War 2, as the result, the KMT was pushed away from the mainland and withdraws to Taiwan on December 7, 1947, Chiang Kai-Shek relocated the ROC from the mainland to Taiwan while Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949 and occupied the mainland. The Chinese Civil War stopped on May 10, 1950, where the PLA successfully occupied the Hainan Island.

The ROC pledge that someday they will retake the mainland while the PRC is also claiming Taiwan. The name 'China' is still disputed between the ROC and the PRC since there is no armistice or treaty that was signed between the two parties after the civil war.
