I feel like this series, with its darker tone, probably better reflects ZUN's statements about the outside world in Touhou. It's heavily implied (if not outright said...I can't really recall,) that the outside world is a bit of a dystopia now. It's the future and there's tons of fancy technology around...but the world's gone to shit regardless. I do remember something about Maribel stating that real strawberries are either very rare or outright extinct, for example.
