Sorry, NWSiaCB, for "beating you to the punch" again. I just couldn't help it.
But, hey! Look! I'm translating the thing too!

Well, I thought to check this time, so I wasn't just getting surprised. This series is in plenty of need of more translation. (Probably 60-80 images in this pool without translation.)

Still, with things uploaded to twitter, it's worth checking to make sure you're getting the large version of an image... On twitter this was four different images that were each larger, so I'll just upload them as children of this.

On an unrelated note, this thing qualifies as a true tagging nightmare.

I'm not entirely sure on all these characters. I'm guessing Fumizuki is in the bottom right panel next to Satsuki, because this artist always draws those two together and with Fumizuki having that kind of face. I think that's Sazanami climbing the pole in the far right of the bottom right panel because her bunny is nearby. I'm totally guessing that's Isonami on the left in the top right panel next to Yayoi. (Yayoi because only pale-eyed characters have that double-ring eye by this artist.)

Maybe "shell" can be more appropriate than "cartridge" there.

"Shell" refers to the things on the backs of turtles and snails, not ammunition. ("Shell casing" is an expended round, but that doesn't seem applicable here.)

I presume the tag came up and wiped out more obvious tags like "bullet" because there's a vocal minority who are quite litigious about proper identification of anything firearm-related on Danbooru.

Let's just read this and then decide what is more appropriate.
From Wikipedia, cause I don't know where else to search for more info:

    Shell:
"A shell is a payload-carrying projectile which, as opposed to shot, contains an explosive or other filling, though modern usage sometimes includes large solid projectiles properly termed shot. Shells are usually large-calibre projectiles fired by artillery and combat vehicles (including tanks), and warships."

    Bullet:
"A bullet is a projectile propelled by a firearm, sling, slingshot, or air gun. Bullets do not normally contain explosives, but damage the intended target by impact and penetration."

    Cartridge:
"A cartridge (also called a round or a shell) is a type of ammunition packaging a bullet or shot, a propellant substance (usually either smokeless powder or black powder) and a primer within a metallic, paper, or plastic case that is precisely made to fit within the firing chamber of a firearm.
In popular use, the term "bullet" is often misused to refer to a complete cartridge."

So... basically, a bullet is for firearm, handguns, small arms and the like. A cartridge is for rifles and some small arms. While a Shell is for tank, artillery and Warships.

Ah yes, I was actually referring to the 2nd panel, not the tags themselves. Removing tag cartridge as it explicitly mentions firearms.

Stuff about shells and bullets and cartridges.

Its fine if you want to argue what tags should mean what, but that's for the forums.

Danbooru's shell tag is used to tag the hardened exoskeleton of animals. As such, it's not an appropriate tag for anything that explodes unless it's from Mario Kart, blue, and spiky. Maybe you can make a case that it's a confusing tag, but again, that's for the forums.

Cartridge is the only one that has a Danbooru wiki entry referring to the actual complete package of bullet and casing.

Bullet exists, but says in its wiki entry that you should call it a cartridge if it is unfired and the casing and such are still attached.

Ammunition seems a little redundant if we have cartridge AND bullet, so there could either be a merging or at least the wikis made clearer and have redirects to one another.

I don't particularly care what's being used so long as there's one clear tag for a given object so that it's easy to both tag and search. There's already a half-dozen tags I have to memorize just for each shipgirl's hair, including all the distinctions of bangs and low twintails versus regular twintails. (It seems odd that suddenly people want to argue just this one, since nobody tagged it anything until I tagged it cartridge, among a hundred other tags.)

The problem with using that definition of needing "firearms" to exclude cartridge is that "firearms" redirects to "gun", which is defined as "anything that uses explosives to fire a projectile", so any sort of warship shell would also qualify under the wiki definition we already have.

Again, the tags are a dizzying mess, here.

A lot about arguing about tags

Whoa! Slow down there, homie. I (and Darkagma too, I think) wasn't arguing with you about tags and tags' definition! We were talking about what is the more appropriate term to refer to that thing (bullet, cartridge, shell, whatever) they're carrying in panel 2! And nothing else!
I was just pointing out that Shell is the correct term to refer to Warships' ammunition, and nothing more! I swear! Please, don't kill me! I'm too young to die!! You can do whatever you want with the tags! Just let me live!!!

Perhaps we could propose/reengineer the tags so that gun is the most generic one (which it is) which is implied whenever a portable "firearm" (from pistols to AT rifles) is tagged or a non-portable "heavy gun" (artillery, tank and warship guns) is tagged.

Regarding ammunition, almost everything is ammo or ammunition (perhaps a formal definition is necessary if it includes only unfired rounds or even flying bullets). Firearms usually shoot bullets instead of shells (which contains an explosive or other type of filling). Both shells and bullets (and kinetic penetrators if that matters) are projectiles. Shells imply explosive filling, so a kinetic energy penetrator (like Blitz Gundam lances) is closer to a bullet than a shell. A rifle grenade or a grenade launcher may need further discussion.

A fired projectile will, at most of times (with the rare exception of caseless ammunition), leave a spent cartridge if it is a firearm or a shell casing if fired by heavy guns (an English native speaker may give verdict whether a "spent cartridge" can refer to "shell casings" too). As far as I know, battleship batteries fire projectiles where the propellants and the shell are only joined moments before loading the gun (making it caseless ammunition).

A native English speaker can probably say if cartridge and round are and can be used for both firearm and heavy gun ammunition.

EDIT: as ice73 pointed out, shotguns actually fire "shotgun shells" or "slugs". There is already a tag for shotgun shell in Danbooru. I believe "spent cartridge" would be more appropriate than "shell casing" for a fired round.

Firearms never fire shells (since they imply explosive payload), only bullets.

What do you call a round of shotgun ammunition then?

Shotguns shoot shells. Encased in them could be a slug (equivalent to a bullet), buck shot (the iconic pellets), and bird shot (bb sized pellets).

For the other terms, bullet for post-use (in air type), ammunition for things needing more than on hand to hold (artillery pieces and the like), and cartridge for the common association with firearms. That's how I see it at least.
