Seems to be depicting (if that's the right word) the Battle of Savo Island as all the depicted ships were present with Choukai acting as flagship.

Tenryuu was lightly damaged by gunfire from USS Chicago (hence eye patch) and later two of her torpedoes hit and badly damaged the heavy cruiser USS Quincy.

That 戦斗 is deliberate isn't it ?
Hard to imagine such typo in handwriting.

Yup, it's a shortcut of sorts for some of the stroke-intensive characters.

is this the battle where Tenryuu sunk a much more advanced and better equipped ship?

It's nice to finally have a source as to where exactly it was that Tenryuu lost her "eye." Looking through English internet results never seemed to mention it.
