I don't think those were regular soldiers. More like the elite modified supersoldiers that keep cropping up in military anime. Perhaps the IJA was running Tankboys/Tankmen of a sort before the IJN figured out how to summon shipgirls.

The anti tank troopers' disregard for death is so they can shoot their door knocker at point blank range, else it wouldn't be strong enough to pierce through a tank's armour.
