And that's actually possible, but "doll" part is still difficult though.

I don't know if it's possible yet; correct me if I'm wrong. Nitori looks like she is wearing some kind of wire harness with trackers on vital joints (which I think is similar to how Microsoft Kinect thinks of movement), but the level of motion capture needed to not only move a droid, but keep its balance, would require a full motion capture suit at least.

BigDog is the most sophisticated autonomous mobile robot I can think of, and it's movements are derpy looking at best. Nothing near human locomotion, or anything that's believably life like for that matter, exists yet.

But at the rate technology is developing, maybe in the next decade or so we may be alive to see semi-organic cyborg robots being controlled by people with wires hooked to their nervous systems. And it's only a matter of time before some old nerd imposes Utsuho onto one of them. Although, I think a certain twintail'd diva would be the first to transition into the real world via android, if it hasn't already happened.

You should take a look at Spot (youtube link) then.

There is lots of anatomy and tech knowledge involved.

As far as I know some bits of modern technology and little google-fu I'll try to "disassemble" this.

    Nitori uses

    • sort of this stuff,
    • joint and movement sync out of sight like on "capture motion". As markers Nitori uses devices on joints, besides there is exist this stuff. So basically doll acting like exoskeleton, but control parts separated from doll.

Possible doll's intestines, problems and solutions

    • If Nitori have sort of force feedback on her gear, she can technically "manually" balance doll by "naturally" balancing herself just like inside exoskeleton. If not - doll must have sophisticated balancing module that might use:
      • Set of accelerometers on various key points (legs, head, chest etc) - they control actual position of key point relatively to gravity and/or main key point.
      • Joints might have something compact and accurate enough like hall-effect sensor, in short - think of stick on your gamepad, where stick position on pad = limb position relatively to joint;
      • Forearm and hand - one, two. Same goes for legs (ask google or youtube).
      • I've got a habit to ride tram without holding bars and poles with hands. That helped me to train and understand how balancing work: body read distribution of weight on various parts - legs, pelvis, spine, head; axial forces on same parts; visual feedback (the fastest and most accurate) - eyes "stick" to some spot, rumble on moving stock are very distinctive for eyes - you'll feel change of focus and direction of eyes and let your naturally evolved balance mechanism to do the work on compensating sudden pushes, it just needs some practice in "reading" and reacting to rumble. This algorithm is on software part, very dependable on accuracy of sensors and feedback delay.
    • Powerfull enough servos or step motors to move own 113 kg.
    • Power source - plug in asscoccyx, as shown on picture.
    • Automation - either computer inside body or via same cord as power.
    • Control - Wi-Fi, broadband and frequency is enough to control this doll.

    And cherry on this cake

You get an internet for pulling up some interesting stuff and making me eat my words. I stand corrected; the technology, while apparently experimental, certainly exists.

Although I still feel like the final issue to making human androids is the liveliness of a human personality. Creating a machine being that doesn't look and move like a zombie is going to take a bit of trick.

The point was about creating the "doll-with-strings", not the fully autonomous droid. If I wasn't sure about creating this sort of things "today" - I'd not do this searching. Also I didn't have intention to feed you with own words, just tried to say what could be used.
