Ideally, it's something you do with an apron and leather gloves, but hardcore, shirtless male blacksmiths are one of the few girl fanservice tricks of classic fantasy cliches.

You don't need protection (or clothes) when you have perfect abs and heroic biceps; so says fantasy.
