Episode 8 of Yuru Yuri (San Hai☆) features it. Apparently it tastes good if you shug it down but tastes "surprising" on first notice. It also features Sakurakou dreaming about Himawari, so this puts two and two together. ( Though the original dream is completely different. )
I think I read somewhere that the flavor profile of root beer is entirely outside of typical Japanese experiences, and so it's much more of an acquired taste. Masochist cider is a local nickname for it on account of 'oh gross' being a common reaction.

Maybe it's not always true, but I generally think the Japanese preference for complicated harmonic flavors don't mesh well with the strong over-rich single-character foods Americans use.

From what I understand, most Japanese equate the flavor of root beer with the scent of medicinal patches (e.g. Salonpas). They're similar in the same way cherry soda tastes like cherry cough syrup, but I suppose that's enough to turn people off to an unfamiliar beverage at first sip.
