Considering how Graf's machinery was partially based off of Akagi's, and how Aquila's was based off of Graf's (I'm pretty sure, anyways) I suppose you could say they are all cousins.

Thats not correct...Graf's machinery is completely diferent on the base that the minimum required speed for them was 34-35 knots, akagi's required speed was 30 knots (same as reconstructed kongo) and aquila's powerplant was a cruiser machinery that was ready but not constructed, and thanks to her bigger dimensions got her speed reduced to 28 knots (the cruiser top speed was 35-40 knots)

Sorry, I used the wrong words. What I meant was how Graf's flight deck was partially based off of Akagi's, while Aquila was built with German catapults intended for Graf's cancelled sister ship.

Aquila got the powerplant of not one but two projected light cruisers of the "Capitani Romani" class (the Paolo Emilio and the Cornelio Silla). A single powerplant of that class was able to deliver up to 110.000 hp, but, In the Aquila, they were downpowered to 151.000 hp total, to improve reliability and reduce fuel consumption. The projected speed was 30 knots, and, with 151.000 hp for 27.800 tons, there are few doubts she could achieve that (the Akagi had 133.000 hp for 42.000 tons).
