The male and female blades were a direct result of the original weapon getting broken in half by Sophitia in the Soul Blade arcade. Siegfried took the bigger "male" half and became Nightmare, Cervantes was reanimated by the smaller "female" half and later surrendered it when Nightmare called all of Soul Edge's pieces home in SC4.
