it's painful because the reason he became Human after win the grail is to experience what he couldn't have when he still alive, his wish to live like a normal human and have a freedom. yet he turn back into what he originated was to save us.
To think that the guy that he though was just pestering him was his so called way ward soon trying to bond wit him.....that is extremely heart breaking
