Classic magical girl shows are primarily for little girls, but the subversions are all for older, and generally more male, audiences. It's not unusual for the boys to only be familiar with the dark twist ones like Madoka rather than watching Fushigi Boshi no Futago Hime or something. (And nearly everyone on Danbooru knows what Madoka is, but do they know Futago Hime?)
