The general consensus has been that the live action movie is lacking, thematically and otherwise, regardless of prior familiarity with the anime or manga.

Nah the movie was ok. The anime is simply just too awesome...

The parts of the movie that were good were the parts that were borrowed.

The movie added nothing interesting to the canon of GitS.
