Probably a retcon. I think he might have forgotten why he chose her in the first place, or the initial reason is too embarrassing to speak of.

Maybe he just picked her on looks and didn't get her name, so he had to ask her. And, well, he's a brat.

Now people (including me) are going to wonder what his reason is.

Almost a year later and I think I have an answer: Other than a retcon, I think his initial reaction was a red-herring. He needed to distract her from his real reason. How he played it off, I have no idea.
