Well, being engaged with kittens at regular basis (granted you aren't deadly allergic to them) appears to release certain hormones that do, in fact make you less likely to feel the effects of depression. ; )

Edit. This does also apply to most fluffy, adorable animals I believe? So long as you can cuddle with them it improves your mental state.
