The thumb is in the right place. The nail would be facing outward and not be visible from this position.

By "right hand" they mean the girls right hand which is on the watermelon. There the "thumb" is shaped and jointed like a pinky finger which is wrong. It'd be fine if that were the index finger with the thumb behind the melon, but if that were the case she would have five fingers and a thumb.
