Exactly! Everyone does all this cutesy artwork of her and doujins make her act all sweet and crap but a lot of people seem to ignore or are just plain ignorant of the fact that Rin has one of the most evil abilities in the entire series! When she takes someone's corpse their soul becomes trapped, unable to pass on (because the Kasha in mythology could carry off people's souls to hell, even if the person didn't deserve it)!
I'm not sure if this is forever or until Rin releases it, but either way its a freakishly evil ability for someone whose often portrayed as one of the more relatively kind characters in this series!

My guess is that she gave Shanghai to Marisa at some point and upon realizing Shanghai had returned alone by means of a cat rather than Marisa herself, she likely inferred that the Kirisame did not return from Former Hell.
