I dont know why but the way you phrased it made me think this was some sort of art class assignment for the girls.

Just a story for the nude pics. "The shipgirls took pictures of each other for my book." His doujin captions a nude "Prinz Eugen photographed by Graf Zepplin" for example. No other reason given.
