Was this fanart made by someone who didn't play the game? Only the Spartan Laser to my knowledge uses directed energy; the other Human weapons are all kinetic-energy weapons.

S/he sure did, but since the assault rifle is your default starting weapon, I think the artist would have definitely have noticed what the weapon did had they booted up a standard slayer match.

Then again, the XBOX360 is by no means very popular in Japan, right?

Im glad someone can see well enough to see that it is a shotty... But it does look like its shooting electricity, and you know what, I dont really give a damn, it looks cool.

Maybe this fanart is representation of halo1's shotgun.Shotgun's power in halo 1 cannot be explained if not shooting some kind of superscience cartridge.It even hurts vehicles for christ's sake.
