Her captain and Bismarck's Captain are good friends, and they both are like sister ships of different types, given completed construction at neighboring shipyard about same time. Lindemann, Bismarck's captain, lent his ship's band to commemorate U-556's launching to Wohlfarth, U's captain. In response, Wolhfarth made a written 'certificate' saying that the sub would protect Bismarck.

Sadly, U-556 can't do anything when Ark Royal and Renown bombarded Bismarck because she's run outta torps, even if the sub's positioned directly below the two. The sub dived and only surfaced later to find out Bismarck already been sunk.

That's how sad the story goes. A promise unfulfilled between 'sisters'.
