    I've been trying to figure out what kind of submersible that is. It vaguely resembles an Alvin-class without a sail.

    But if the abyssals are meant to be human sized it seems too small. It might be an ROV (remotely operated vehicle), but then it should have a tether.

    It could be an Autonomously Operated Vehicle (AOV), those are things now.
