So IRL this author is horribly overweight right?
These food jokes are getting to near-Homer Simpson levels.

He's modestly overweight at most, I think, at least to judge from the few images I've seen of him. (Mind you, I speak from the viewpoint of a U.S. resident, so my sense of what constitutes "horribly overweight" may be skewed.) Certainly his wife does what she can to keep his food intake in check, or at least to help him compensate for excesses.

I think part of the joke is usually that, as an artist whose steady income is never totally guaranteed, he loves good food deals so much that he doesn't ever want to pass up on one, especially when traveling. Or it could be Homer Simpson-esque, I don't know. :-)

If I don't have a steady income, I'll be surviving off plain rice and bread, nevermind the malnorishment.

From what I remember of the video during his trip to Boston when he's not wearing his baggy coat(granted, a lot can change in 7 years), he's as moonspeaker said. I wouldn't put him on horribly overweight levels.
