Having viewed her Christmas episodes for the first time, I've concluded that Draph females are short to make them more effective miners. They were an artificial slave race made for that purpose, and while modern draph females are typically very beautiful and glamorous, the dimorphism between the sexes exists for the sake of a division of labor. Specifically being able to work in confined spaces and heavy lifting.

That doesn't explain the massive breasts and wide hips. I believe that the males are the slave labor while the females are for more... personal use.

Females are built in such a way to bear and support the development of the males. I thought that was self-evident.
Suffice to say, the reference to the Christmas episode has Almeida (pictured here), explaining that she got a pickaxe for Christmas. At first, she didn't like it, but she's gotten alot of use out of it over the years, and it's basically her favorite thing. That she enjoys mining. Wouldn't making a slave race enjoy their work be logical?
Not to mention that she enjoys the sight of gem stones. Must be nice to break up the monotony of hacking away at dirt and stone only to have the sporadic glimpse of something pretty filtering through.
Is she more of a miner than a blacksmith? I always thought it was the latter, with the former just her simply being self-sufficient in material gathering.

The inspiration behind her character seems to be "archetypical draph girl". The personification of their culture, their industry. Not only does she love mining (family trade), her personal aspiration is to create a weapon worthy of her love interest who is a hulk of a cyber man locked in a symbiotic relationship with a living weapon.
In an odd way, she's competing with the weapon for his attention, laying her pride as a craftswoman on the line, whether she knows it or not. She is too young and immature to understand what it is she's doing exactly, but that seems to be the gist of it.
